Andy's Story

When Everything Fell Apart

Before Ahava, I was living with my mum in Rush Green. One day, she decided to leave and move to Liverpool. It happened suddenly.I was allowed to stay in the house for a short time, but because my name wasn’t on the tenancy, the council eventually evicted me. That’s when everything fell apart.

I was already struggling with my mental health, and during that time, things got very dark. There were moments when I genuinely felt like ending my life was the only way out. I felt lost, scared, and alone. Things began to change in August 2021, when I was referred to a night shelter in Romford. That referral changed the direction of my life.

How Support Gave Me a Second Chance

Honestly, it has been a blessing. I don’t know where I would be without Kim, Pete, and the rest of the team. They helped me in ways they probably don’t even realise. I’m proud of myself for finding a place of my own. I haven’t gone back to self-harm, and for the first time in a long time, I feel like I’m starting a new chapter.

What Kept Me Going When I Wanted to Give Up

My faith played a big part. I believe God kept pushing me to keep going, even when I felt like giving up.My wife-to-be also kept me going. She was with me through it all. I wasn’t completely alone, and that made a difference.

Where I Am Today

In 2023, I started helping out at Hope Café after meeting Daniella, who was volunteering there at the time. That opportunity eventually turned into a job.

I now work as a barista and also help out in the kitchen. Hope Café is part of Ahava Community, and every penny from paying customers goes back into supporting people experiencing homelessness.
What I enjoy most is serving people food and drinks, building my confidence, and improving my communication skills. It feels good to give back, especially knowing how much support once meant to me.
